The average (mean) rate is $221, about $33 above the median, because the top of the market stretches far. The top 10% start at $406 an hour, more than five times the bottom 10%. Executive coaching has the highest median of any coach type in our index. For comparison, leadership coaches have a typical rate of $159 an hour.

The US, UK and Singapore are nearly the same, with typical rates of $212 to $216. Australia is lower at $185, Canada at $159, and South Africa at $150. Canada's typical rate is $53 below the US. South Africa has the lowest median but a wide spread: Its upper quarter ($275) is close to the top of the other countries. The overall $188 median also counts executive coaches outside these six countries.
Does an ICF credential change the rate?

Under International Coaching Federation (ICF) rules, the ACC needs 100 logged coaching hours with 8 or more clients, and the PCC needs 500 hours with 25 or more clients (ICF). For executive coaches, that extra experience shows up in price at the PCC level. PCC coaches charge a typical $211, about $24 more than coaches with no credential listed. ACC coaches charge a typical $171, about $16 less than coaches with no credential. In executive coaching, the entry-level credential does not come with a higher rate. Too few coaches list the top ICF level, the MCC, for us to report it.

- The PCC credential. It goes with a typical rate about $24 higher than no credential. The ACC does not.
- Country. The US, UK and Singapore sit near $212 to $216. Australia ($185), Canada ($159) and South Africa ($150) are lower in our data.
- Price ranges. 90% of executive coaches post a range. The typical low end is $125 and the typical high end is $247. If a coach quotes near $247, ask them to explain what sets that price.
- A long top end. One in ten executive coaches charges $406 an hour or more, which is why the average sits above the median.
