Lower quarter $125 $102 $23

The gap is small at the low end and widest at the top. At the bottom 10%, the two titles cost about the same. From the middle up, executive coaches charge $29 to $56 more per hour. In the US alone, the typical rate is $212 for executive coaches and $175 for leadership coaches.

What is the difference between an executive coach and a leadership coach?

The titles describe who the coach usually works with more than a different method.

Executive coach Leadership coach
Usual client Senior leaders: C-suite, VPs, founders Managers at any level, often new or mid-level
Common topics Strategy, board and team dynamics, big decisions, how others see them Managing people, giving feedback, delegating, running a team

Twelve sessions at the typical rate (estimate) $2,256 $1,908

The last row is an estimate (12 sessions at the typical rate).

How much the two titles overlap

Many coaches use both titles, which is why buyers get confused. This table shows what other titles each group lists on its profiles. The shares are our estimates from profile counts.

Other title listed Share of executive coaches (n) Share of leadership coaches (n)
Leadership coach 48% (1,082) Not applicable
Executive coach Not applicable 36% (1,081)
Life coach 40% (905) 48% (1,450)
Business coach 29% (646) 23% (699)
Career coach 25% (559) 26% (793)
Team coach 9% (200) 9% (272)

Two things stand out. About 1,080 coaches use both titles, so the title alone tells you little about who a coach works with. And a large share of both groups also list "life coach." That is not bad, but if you want someone who has worked with senior leaders, ask directly about the roles of their past clients.

Do credentials close the gap?

Credentials do not always raise the rate (ACC executive coaches list less than executive coaches with no credential), but executive coaches stay higher than leadership coaches at every level we could measure.

Credential listed Executive coach median (n) Leadership coach median (n) Difference
None listed $187 (2,034) $151 (2,751) $36
ICF, level not stated $200 (69) $175 (94) $25
ICF ACC $171 (63) $155 (79) $16
ICF PCC $211 (78) $200 (92) $11

The gap is smaller among credentialed coaches: $11 to $25, compared with $36 for coaches with no credential listed. One result surprises buyers: A PCC credentialed leadership coach ($200) costs $13 more than a typical executive coach with no credential ($187). If coach training matters to you, the title matters less than the credential. MCC rows are left out because each group has fewer than 20 coaches.

What drives the price

  • The client's seniority. The title aimed at senior leaders carries the higher price, $29 more at the median.
  • The top of the market. The gap is $5 at the bottom 10% and $56 at the top 10%. The most expensive executive coaches pull away from everyone else.
  • Credentials. A PCC credential lifts the typical rate to $211 for executive coaches and $200 for leadership coaches.
  • Location. US rates run higher than the overall figures for both titles ($212 and $175).

Executive coach vs mentor

A mentor usually shares their own experience in your field and tells you what worked for them. A coach is paid to help you think through your own situation, whatever their background. Paid mentors are rare in our index: We found fewer than 20 who publish a rate, too few to report a price. If you have access to a strong mentor for free, start there and hire a coach for problems the mentor cannot help with.
