MBA admissions consultants charge about $100 an hour at the median, based on 183 consultants who list hourly rates on coaching marketplaces. Most charge between $69 and $152 an hour. The top 10% charge $259 or more. Two consultants quoted in a 2017 article charged $4,500 to $4,700 for a full one-school package. That money buys about 45 hours at the typical hourly rate.

MBA admissions consultant cost per hour

The table below lays out MBA consultants' hourly rates from the bottom 10% to the top 10%.

The bottom of this market is very flat. The lowest 10% and the lower quarter are only $4 apart ($65 and $69). So there is a clear price floor near $65 to $70 an hour. Above the median, the spread widens a lot, and the top 10% charge more than two and a half times the typical rate.

MBA consultants vs other graduate admissions consultants

MBA consulting is the largest group in our admissions data. Here is how it compares with consultants for other graduate programs. We only show program types with at least 20 consultants.

MBA and law school consultants share the highest typical rate, at $100 an hour. MBA consultants also have the highest top end, at $259. Medical school consultants are close on the typical rate ($94) but their top end is much lower ($150). If you are comparing quotes across programs, $100 an hour is a normal MBA price, not a premium one.

What a full MBA application costs

Many MBA consultants sell fixed-price packages per school, not hours. Few publish those prices in a way we can count, so the table below is our estimate of what different amounts of help would cost at the hourly rates above. The hour counts are examples, not a standard.

As an outside check, a 2017 AACSB article quoted two consultants with fixed one-school packages at $4,500 and $4,700. One of them said applicants apply to five schools on average, at a cost of $9,250 with that firm. Another said consultant fees are typically 2% to 5% of the total cost of an MBA. These are claims from consultants, not survey data, and they are several years old.

The takeaway: A full one-school package costs about the same as 45 hours at the typical hourly rate. If you only need help with one part, like interview prep or a final essay read, buying hours is usually the lower cost route.

What drives the price

• Package vs hourly. Hourly help at the typical $100 rate lets you pay only for what you need. A full package covers the whole process but costs thousands.
• Number of schools. Each extra school adds essays and deadlines. Consultants who charge per school raise the total with every school on your list.
• The top 10%. Consultants at the top end charge $259 or more an hour. The average ($136) sits well above the median ($100) because of this group.
• Flat rates. Only 1% of MBA consultants in our data list a range, so the listed rate is usually the real hourly price.

Is an MBA admissions consultant worth it?

It can be worth it when:

• You are aiming at highly selective programs and want an outside read on your school list and story.
• You have a strong record but struggle to explain your goals in writing.
• You are short on time and want someone to keep you on track across several deadlines.
• You want practice interviews with feedback before the real thing.

The 2017 AIGAC survey, as reported by AACSB, found that applicants who hired a consultant were more likely to apply to more schools. Of those who hired one, 39% were influenced by their consultant to apply to a school they had not considered before.

It is often not worth it when:

• Your target schools are not highly selective, or you are applying to one local program.
• You want someone else to write your essays. The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth says submitting an application that is not your own work breaks its honor code. It adds that admissions staff notice the signs, such as polished essays next to low writing or English test scores.
• The cost would come out of money you need for tuition or moving.
• A consultant promises admission. Tuck's admissions team says not to trust anyone who offers a guaranteed admission.

Tuck also states plainly that many people are admitted to business school every year without a consultant. Free school events, current students, and your own network can cover much of the same ground.
