A career coach costs about $125 an hour at the median, based on 2,998 career coaches who publish their rates. Most charge between $85 and $180 an hour. Coaches in the top 10% charge $250 or more, and the lowest 10% charge $55 or less. Coaches with an ICF PCC credential have a typical rate of $194 an hour.

The United States and Singapore have the highest typical rate in this group, at $138. South Africa has the lowest, at $70. Canada ($106) is below the $125 typical rate across all countries, while the United Kingdom ($126) and Australia ($121) sit close to it. If you are happy to meet by video, a coach in a lower cost country can be a real option, as long as they know the job market you are aiming for.
Do certified career coaches charge more?
Yes, at the higher levels. Most career coaches (2,781 of 2,998) list no coaching credential. Those who list one from the International Coaching Federation (ICF) charge more. The ICF has three credentials: ACC (Associate Certified Coach), PCC (Professional Certified Coach), and MCC (Master Certified Coach). Too few career coaches list MCC to show here.

A PCC career coach typically costs $69 an hour more than a coach with no credential. ACC coaches are only $2 above ($127). The lower quarter moves up for PCC too: The bottom of the PCC market ($135) is above the typical rate for coaches with no credential ($125).
A credential says something about coaching skill. It does not tell you the coach knows hiring in your field. Use it as one signal, not the only one.
Career coaches on coaching marketplaces
Some career coaches sell time through coaching marketplaces instead of their own site or a directory. Their pricing looks a little different.

The typical rate is about the same in both places. Marketplace coaches in our data all list one flat hourly rate, while directory coaches mostly list a range. The upper quarter on marketplaces is a bit higher at $200.

Many career coaches sell packages of several sessions, not single hours. Only 19 career coaches in our index publish a monthly price, too few to report. So the table below is our estimate of what a package would cost at the hourly rates above. These are not package prices coaches published.

What drives the price
- Credential. PCC coaches charge a typical $194 an hour, versus $125 with no credential listed. That is a $69 gap on the typical rate.
- Country. The typical rate runs from $70 in South Africa to $138 in the United States and Singapore.
- Where they sell. Marketplace and directory coaches have close typical rates ($120 and $125), so the channel is not a big price driver.
- Flat rate vs range. 90% of directory career coaches quote a range. The low end of that range is typically $100 and the high end $150. The final price often depends on the package or the level of the role.
- A small high-priced group. The average ($148) sits above the median ($125). A few coaches charging $250 or more pull the average up, so the median is the better guide to a normal price.
Is a career coach worth the cost?
A career coach tends to be worth it when a better outcome is worth far more than the fee. Examples: A higher salary offer, a faster job search, or a clean move into a new field. At the typical $125 an hour, six sessions would cost an estimated $750.
It is often not worth it when you mainly need job leads (a recruiter or your network does that for free), when you have not decided what you want at all and have no budget for several sessions, or when a free career center through your school or alumni group offers the same help. It is also not the right fit if stress or mood is the real problem. That is work for a licensed counselor.
