Business coaches are worth it if you have a specific problem to solve and will act between sessions. They charge a typical $148 an hour, and the middle half charge $95 to $225 (3,335 coaches who publish rates). Six months of twice-monthly sessions at the typical rate costs about $1,776. They are not worth it if you need someone to do the work for you, or if free mentoring would cover the gap.

What business coaching costs over a real engagement
It helps to price coaching over several months, not one session. Totals are estimates.

Some coaches sell monthly programs instead of hours. Business coaches who publish monthly prices online list a typical $300 a month (59 programs), close to two hours at the typical hourly rate ($296).
A simple test: If the problem you want to fix is not worth at least a few thousand dollars to your business, a year of coaching probably costs more than it returns.
Are business coaches worth the money? What the research says
Most outcome research on coaching studies employees inside organizations, not owners of small businesses. A 2014 meta-analysis in The Journal of Positive Psychology pooled coaching studies in organizations and found positive effects on all five outcomes it measured: Performance and skills, well-being, coping, work attitudes, and goal-directed self-regulation. The strongest effect was on goal-directed self-regulation, and the authors concluded that coaching is, overall, an effective tool in organizations.
That is good news for coaching in general. It does not prove that any single business coach will grow your revenue. Treat revenue promises and "10x" claims with care.
Do credentials make a business coach worth more?
It is easy to assume a certified coach is worth a higher price. In business coaching, most credentials barely move the rate. Only the PCC level shows a clear gap.

A coaching credential shows training in how to coach. It does not show that someone has run or grown a business. For a business coach, ask about the businesses they have built or worked with, and ask for a past client you can call.
What you get for the money
- Often, a coach with several labels. About half of business coaches in our data also list "life coach," and about half list "entrepreneurship coach." Check which one you are actually hiring.
- Little extra cost for most credentials. ICF business coaches without a stated level, and ACC coaches, charge a typical $149 to $150, the same as the $148 for coaches with none listed. PCC coaches charge a typical $175, $27 more. You are not getting business experience from the credential either.
- A separate market at the top. Rates of $362 an hour or more are about two and a half times the median. That price should come with a clear track record in your kind of business.
- Accountability as much as advice. The research above found the largest effect on goal-directed self-regulation, which means setting goals and following through.
